Google Search Console Adds Generative AI Performance Tracking for All Users
As Search Engine Roundtable notes, the Generative AI Performance Report is now appearing as an expandable tab beneath the main Performance view.

Google's Search Console has quietly exposed a new reporting panel across the majority of accounts. As Search Engine Roundtable notes, the Generative AI Performance Report is now appearing as an expandable tab beneath the main Performance view.
What the panel exposes
The report isolates impressions generated by Google's AI features in Search and Discover, separable from the legacy organic line. Four data dimensions surface: impressions, pages, countries, and devices. Date slicing runs hourly through monthly. Clicks and queries remain absent from the data set. Google's own footnote gates visibility on a volume threshold — properties without sufficient impressions in AI surfaces will not see the panel rendered at all. John Mueller confirmed on Reddit that the rollout is not yet universal, with the same sufficient-data logic that governs the Discover and News reports.
For a domain investor, this is a new measurement layer entering due diligence. AI impressions register as a distinct signal. A domain with thin content can still accrue impressions if cited inside an AI Overview. A property with flat traditional organic traffic can show non-zero AI impressions worth pricing into a valuation.
The diligence checklist we apply
Three checkpoints for any acquisition target carrying this data:
- Pull the Search Console screenshot or verified export for the candidate. Confirm the AI tab renders.
- Compute AI impressions as a share of total impressions. A ratio above five percent indicates the domain is being cited in AI summaries rather than incidentally scraped.
- Treat zero as inconclusive, not negative. The impression threshold may simply be unmet. Ask the seller for trailing-three-month data, not a single-week screenshot.
Absent click and query data, the panel cannot tell you whether AI impressions convert to human visits. It only tells you whether the asset is being indexed by the generative layer.
The French pressure point
Separately, as Search Engine Land reports, APIG — an alliance of roughly 300 French newspapers — has filed a complaint with France's competition authority. The claim: Google deployed AI Overviews in France in late July without publisher consent, breaching a 2022 news compensation framework. Publishers argue the summaries depress referral traffic by answering queries directly inside Search.
For US-domain portfolios this is not directly actionable today. It is structurally relevant. The metric you can now measure in Search Console is the same product a publisher coalition is actively trying to restrict. Model AI impression counts as recoverable, not earned.
Verdict
Track the signal. Do not bid on it alone. The threshold is opaque, the click data is absent, and a major market is in open dispute. Acquire on traditional fundamentals; treat AI impressions as a free upside, not a foundation.
